- What are you most excited about working in the Michigan policy space? I am excited by the prospect of conducting policy research which could then impact thousands of current and future students across the state. I believe my background serving as a college adviser will allow me to highlight the inequities embedded in our current higher education system, especially for historically marginalized students. By participating in this fellowship, I will apply the policy knowledge base I will have accrued to my future work advocating for equitable financial aid policies for all Michiganders.
- What impact would you like to leave for students in the higher education policy space? I would like to normalize students engaging in education policy! Do not be afraid to get involved–your experience and ideas are highly valuable. Never doubt the impact telling your story can have on moving the needle towards a more just and equitable higher education landscape. As a double major in Arts & Humanities (RCAH) and French in undergrad, I had no prior experience in policy before getting involved with TICAS. At first, I had a strong case of the imposter phenomenon, but over time I have come to realize the importance of students having a seat at the table. I think oftentimes engaging in policy can feel intimidating, but you have the power to take that first step towards enacting the change you want to see in your community!
- What is something you wish people knew about pursuing higher education in Michigan? From my experience, I’ve found that colleges and universities across the state offer a multitude of services and resources for their students–the tricky part can be locating and accessing them. If you ever find yourself struggling at any point throughout your college journey, from the application process to utilizing financial aid, do not hesitate to reach out and ask for support! Those folks are there to ensure you are equipped with the necessary tools to be successful.
