Strong college accountability is key to reducing the number of students left worse off by burdensome student debt, protecting taxpayers’ investment in higher education, and ensuring colleges deliver on the promises they make to students. Government investigations and student lawsuits have uncovered predatory behaviors at a range of colleges, often targeted at Black and Latino students, student veterans, or students from low-income communities. These behaviors are often concentrated in, but not exclusive to, the for-profit college sector.
High-cost, low-quality college programs that do not provide sufficient instructional quality and earnings outcomes undermine students’ ability to achieve the financial stability that a college degree can bring. Students deserve common-sense protections that prevent federal financial aid dollars from flowing to programs that prioritize profit over student success or fail to provide graduates with the earnings needed to repay their debt.
