Economic Stimulus Should Promote College Affordability

Last week we and 12 other national organizations sent a letter to Congressional leaders urging that any new economic stimulus package include major short-term investments in college affordability. Our proposal includes a crucial Pell Grant increase, a boost in funding for Federal Work-Study, more access to PLUS loans, and the creation of an emergency federal loan fund.

Update on the Bailout

Last week we asked you to join us in opposing U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson's plan to spend part of the $700 billion dollar economic bailout package "rescuing" the private student loan industry. Yesterday, Paulson announced he would move forward with the proposal, creating a new loan authority for providers of private student loans as well as credit cards, car loans, and small business loans.

Stop the Student Loan Bailout

Last week U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson announced a plan to prop up private student loan providers as part of the $700 billion dollar economic bailout package. Yesterday we and eight other national organizations representing students, consumers, colleges, administrators, and others sent a letter to Secretary Paulson urging him to reconsider.
