TICAS Statement on the Proposed 2022-23 Michigan Budget
“At a time when college enrollment among low-income students has fallen more than at any point in 50 years, and Michigan has received billions in federal relief funds, it is very disappointing that Governor Whitmer has not proposed a single additional dollar in need-based financial aid. Students – not just colleges – need and deserve financial support to earn the degrees that will fuel Michigan’s economy and enable them to earn family-sustaining wages. Michigan colleges charge some of the region’s highest average tuition rates and saddle students with extraordinarily high debt levels. This budget offers little to disrupt those trends, let alone make meaningful progress towards the Governor’s stated goal of having 60 percent of adults attain a college degree by 2030. We look forward to working with the legislature to support investments that will meaningfully help low-income students get to and through college.”
