Help Rein in Career Education Rip-Offs!
Want to help stop rip-off career education programs that leave their students drowning in debt? Now's the time to weigh in! There are just a few weeks left to tell the U.S. Department of Education to strengthen its proposed "gainful employment" rule and really protect students and taxpayers.
Thousands of people are lining up to tell the Department why we need a rule that doesn't let failing programs off the hook. They include those who attended and worked for troubled for-profit colleges and witnessed problems firsthand.
Your voice is urgently needed! The for-profit career college industry is paying high-powered lobbyists to drum up opposition to even the weakest rule. At least one for-profit college offered its students free pizza in the campaign against the rule.
We can't offer you pizza, but we can offer the facts about the proposed rule. It would enforce a federal law requiring career education programs receiving federal student aid - at public, nonprofit, and for-profit colleges - to prepare students for gainful employment in a recognized occupation. According to the Department of Education, an astonishing 72 percent of the for-profit college programs subject to the proposed rule produced graduates who on average earned less than high school dropouts.
Please tell the Department that the rule needs to prompt schools to quickly improve or end weak programs that consistently leave students with debts they can't pay. It needs to require schools to provide financial relief to students who enrolled in programs that don't meet basic standards. They will not hear this from the lobbyists who prefer the status quo of over-promising and under-delivering to students - and sticking taxpayers with the tab.
Click here to take action now! Contact the Education Department and share your story in support of a strong rule that protects students and taxpayers from career college cons.
