Coalition Letter to the California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education

The California Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education is undergoing a sunset review process this year, an especially critical oversight process given the growth in enrollment at private for-profit colleges during the pandemic. The Senate Business, Professions, and Economic Development, Senate Education, Assembly Business and Professions, and Assembly Higher Education Committees will hold a joint hearing to review the Bureau’s past performance, after which legislation to reauthorize the Bureau will be drafted. TICAS and partners submitted comments including recommendations to empower the Bureau to be more proactive in preventing student harm, allow them to create and enforce stronger minimum operating standards for schools and protections for students, and to expand the Bureau’s capacity to respond in the event of a school closure.
