Next week, the U.S. Senate will vote on rules protecting students from fraud and other illegal conduct by their colleges, and Congress needs to hear from YOU!
Under the borrower defense rule, students who were cheated by their colleges can discharge their student loans so that they are not buried in debt for years. Hundreds of thousands of students have filed claims in the last few years. Many attended now-closed schools with extensive records of predatory behavior like Corinthian Colleges and ITT Tech. However, Education Secretary Betsy DeVos replaced the rule with her own version, and it leaves students holding the bag for fraud by their schools. By the Department of Education’s own estimates, only 3 percent of cheated students will see their student debt cancelled.
Thousands of you made your voice heard, and thanks to your support the House of Representatives passed the bill in a bipartisan manner. Now the bill goes to the Senate.
The Senate is expected to vote NEXT WEEK on whether to restore the stronger protections and it takes less than a minute to make your voice heard.
